Since WWII, Winchester has basically "standardized" their 44-40 cartridge's velocity's from 1,300fps down to 1,190fps.

Far from the advertised 1,190fps, my velocities from a 20" barrel yielded 1,055fps and 1,056fps from a 24" barrel using modern factory Super-X 44-40 ammunition in two separate testings. Best group @ 100 yards from the Marlin 1894CB was a 5 shot, 4 1/8" group. Groups are not bad BUT avg less than 350fps less than the cartridges vintage velocities and up to at least 400fps slower than it's true potential with certain handloads.
