Vintage Scopes
Winchester 73'
Winchester 73'
Although seldom seen, a few Winchester 73's did indeed have scopes mounted on them. Primitive at best, they were still a work of art! Here are a few examples of which I know little about.
The scope I use on the 73' is a modern replica 6x Malcolm scope. The mounts are a bit crude, but work well for what it is. Aside from the "Short Scope" name, the exact names of the parts are not clear. I had the old ring and mounts but recently updated to the newer style turrets and "return to battery" slide ring mount. I elected to not use the return to battery "option" slide ring. I had already been using the old style and feel the scope is not abused by the mild recoil of the 44-40 loads. One ring I modified to hold an elevation and windage tab to aid in faster adjustments.
Elevation tab mark set for 50 yards. The bottom mark is max close range travel. The 50 yard setting is also used for 25 yards.
Windage tab mark set for 50 yards, no other range marks noted yet!
Turret #'s are set for 50 yards, Elevation "9" and Windage "23", which coincide with the tab marks.Â
Both targets below were shot from 50 yards. While the target on the right has a tighter group, the target on the left was a bit more center for the better score.
