25, 50, 75 and 100 yards
Been dealing with group sizes for a long time, now it is time to center them up on the bullseye!
Group Size - What is expected with the 44-40?
Looking for 1" groups at 25 yards, 2" groups at 50 yards, 4" groups at 100 yards, 8" groups at 200 yards and 24" groups at 300 yards.
The targets being used are modified copies of early 1870's competition targets. Originally larger, for long distance shooting, some features have been changed so they can be more easily used at closer ranges, between 25 to 100 yards.
25 yards, 50 yard zero
Target 2025-5-8-1, shots 1-10
Bullseye POA - 1 1/8" Group
Correct this group by using;
Elevation setting-Use mark 3.50 = 25 yards
Windage setting-Use mark 2.125 = 25 yards
50 yards, 50 yard zero
Target 2025-5-8-2, shots 11-20
Bullseye POA - 1 5/8" Group
Correct this group by using;
Elevation setting-Use mark 3.625 = 50 yards
Windage setting-Use mark 2.00 = 50 yards
100 yards, 50 yard zero
Target 2025-5-8-3, shots 21-30
POA 3 3/4 high - 3 3/16" Group
No corrections
re-zeroed scope for 100 yards next target

Correct this group by using;
Elevation setting-Use mark 1.75 = 100 yards

Bullseye POA - 3 1/2" Group
Scope Setting Used;
Elevation setting - 1.75 = 100 yards
Windage setting - 1.9375 = 100 yards
These two overlay targets shows the over-all group placement for the 20 shots of targets 2025-5-24-1 and 2. The center of both groups are shown in red, and inside a 4" circle.
Elevation - 1/8" high
Windage - 1/4" right
The red circle is a 4 MOA circle.
My first 200 yard target for 2025!
Using the 1878, Third Class Target and scoring method.
I will only be testing with 5 and 10 shot groups, but the competition targets will use 15 shot groups.
200 yards, 100 yard zero
Target 2025-5-24-3, shots 11-20
Bullseye POA 14" holdover - 5" to a 9 1'2" Group, pending flyer or not.
Scope Setting Used
Elevation setting - 1.75 = 100 yards (14" holdover)
Windage setting - 1.9375 = 100 yards
If elevation adjustments work, and these shots pulled up as corrected...they would have scored 3 bullseye and 2 outside...for a score of 23 of a possible 25.
If the windage can be adjusted and hold, the group would have placed 4 bullseyes and one outside for a score 24 out of a possible 25.
This is going to be fun one the adjustments can be made, and the dial decals updated.

I was able to make some decals for the dials. I will add the 75, 200 and 300 yard marks in the future.
The google docs sheet below will help as a D.O.P.E. card.
Scope Mount
I do have a new scope mount ordered, but do not plan on using it for quite some time. Since the mount that I am using is no longer made, and no parts available, I figured I better get a back-up!
